Estimation of Lamb Carcass Composition Using Real-time Ultrasound
نویسنده
چکیده
Real-time ultrasound measurements (Falco 100 device, linear probe 3.5 MHz) were used to estimate in vivo carcass composition of Hungarian Merino (n=9) and British Milksheep (n=10) ram-lambs. Animals aged 110-120 days and were growing 29.73+/-1.11 kg and 28.98+/--0.95 kg, resp. There were little between-breed differences in the ultrasound records for subcutaneous fat thickness (0.33+/-0.10 cm; 0.36+/-0.05 cm), longissimus muscle depth (LMD) (2.44+/-0.12 cm; 2.29+/-0.13 cm) and area (LMA) (17.65+/-0.89 cm; 16.63+/-0.95 cm) taken between the 12th and 13th rib. In our sample, simple correlation of live-weight with ultrasound LMD and LMA, respectively, was 0.52 and 0.44 in Hungarian Merino and it was 0.57 and 0.58 in British Milksheep rams. The corresponding correlation of cold carcass weight with ultrasound LMD and LMA, respectively was 0.43 and 0.48 in Hungarian Merino and it was 0.49 and 0.50 in British Milk-sheep rams. According to these results, ultrasonic measurements can be envolved into the selection system of lamb breeding programs, because these measurements give additional pieces of information about growth intensity, -capacity, and conformation. Additional experiments are planned to compare live ultrasound and carcass ultrasound records for accuracy.

Evaluation of Real-time Ultrasound and Carcass Characteristics for Assessing Carcass Composition in Swine
Results of this study indicate that correlations between real-time ultrasound loin depth and carcass loin muscle area and between carcass loin depth and carcass loin muscle area are high. However, using carcass loin muscle area as the true value, the standard error of prediction for real-time ultrasound loin muscle area was lower than those for loin muscle areas predicted from either real-time ...
متن کاملUltrasonographic in vivo estimation of back fat depth and Longissimus dorsi area in Iberian pigs
Real-time ultrasound is a useful technology for measuring carcass composition in live animals and to select future seedstock for carcass merit. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of ultrasound to predict the amount of fat and muscle in Iberian pigs. A total of 163 Iberian pigs were ultrasonically scanned one day before slaughter, and carcass composition was also dete...
متن کاملPrediction of lamb carcass composition by impedance spectroscopy.
The objective of this study was to compare impedance spectroscopy with resistance measurements at a single frequency (50 kHz) for the prediction of lamb carcass composition. The impedance spectrum is usually recorded by measuring the complex impedance at various frequencies (frequency domain); however, in this study, we also applied the faster and simpler measurement in the time domain (applica...

Ultrasonic measurements were taken on 46 sheep using a real-time ultrasound machine equipped with 2 probes (5 and 7.5 MHz). Measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness (SC) and muscle LM depth (MD) and area (MA) were taken at 2 locations: over the 13th thoracic vertebra (SC13, MD13, and MA13, respectively) and at the interval between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae (SC34, MD34, and MA34, r...
متن کاملEstimation of carcass composition by ultrasound measurements in 4 anatomical locations of 3 commercial categories of lamb.
The objectives were to study the relationship between in vivo ultrasound measurements and cold carcass measurements at 4 anatomical points along the backbone of lambs and to determine appropriate regression equations to estimate carcass composition by using ultrasonic measurements at each anatomical point. The lambs (n = 114) used were suckling lambs (BW = 11.09 kg), light lambs (BW = 22.43 kg)...
